50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BIRTH OF GAY RIGHTS 2019

NEW YORK (June 23, 2019) — On Wednesday, June 26 at 8:30 PM at the Washington Square Arch in Greenwich Village, the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), the NYC Parks Department, and American Experience Films/PBS will present a screening of Stonewall Uprising, the documentary chronicling the historic turning point in the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement.

Based on David Carter’s Stonewall: The Riots that Sparked the Gay Revolution, the film is told through interviews with patrons of the Stonewall Inn, the popular gay bar in Greenwich Village, the policeman who led the raid on it, and reporters. Stonewall Uprising recalls the fervently hostile climate in which the gay community was forced to live in 1969 and the events that led to what one reporter called the LGBTQ community’s “Rosa Parks moment.”
