New York Red Bulls improved their record

The New York Red Bulls on Sunday night, improved their record to 8-1-0 against Western Conference opponents, after defeating LAFC 2-1, in their first-ever meeting at Red Bull Arena.

Danny Royer, starred for the Red Bulls on Sunday, scoring the first goal of the game in the 39th minute, and notching his second of the match in the 80th, breaking a 1-1 tie, which propelled New York to the win.

Royer spoke briefly about his brace after the match.

“On the first one of course, it was a little lucky that the ball bounced right in front of my feet, so I just tried to kick it in and yeah that was lucky,” Royer said. “The second goal was set up really nice. Great pass from Marc Rzatkowski I think to Brad Wright-Phillips.  As I already mentioned, not every striker passes the ball and he’s just incredible. He could’ve tried to shoot himself.”

The Red Bulls improved their home record to 9-2-1, which according to Head Coach Chris Armas, are always must wins.

“Winning at home — it’s a must,” Armas said. “You have to win at home, and the guys, they get the credit because they dig deep themselves, they used the energy of each other, the fans start chanting, and you can feel it coming. The guys showed a lot of fight and courage.”

With the win, New York took down another playoff contending team, which according to Captain Luis Robles is another big win on the teams’ resume.

“Tonight, was a huge win because so far this season when you look at our resume we’ve had some really big wins against some really big teams, and we wanted to continue that, especially when you look at last week and just how disappointing our performance was,” Robles said.

The Red Bulls knew coming into Sunday’s match that LAFC, who sits fourth in the Western Conference standings, was going to be a tough battle in which they would have to eliminate the mistakes that were made against Columbus Crew the previous week.

“They’re a dangerous team, they’ve got some amazing players and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them represent the Western Conference in the final, hopefully along with us in the Eastern Conference,” Robles said. “They’re a good team and we knew coming in if we start the game like we did against Columbus we’re going to be in for a long night, and it was great to see how we were good on set-pieces, we were alert, we were organized, and for the most part we just didn’t give out much.”

The Red Bulls will now turn their attention to the Chicago Fire, which will be the first time former Fire player and now Red Bulls Head Coach Chris Armas will manage against the club he spent 10 seasons with. Kickoff is set for 8:30 pm/et on Saturday August 11, and will be televised on MSG.
