While it was a night that began in a cagey stalemate, it concluded with a viral “Viking Row” celebration right on the pitch, spearheaded by captain Martin Ødegaard on the drums and Erling Haaland at the helm.

The opening 40 minutes were fiercely contested, with Senegal’s midfield duo of Idrissa Gueye and Lamine Camara matching the tactical shape of Norway. The Vikings suffered an early blow when defensive stalwart Julian Ryerson was forced off with an injury just 12 minutes in.

However, his replacement, Marcus Holmgren Pedersen, turned out to be the ultimate wildcard. In the 43rd minute, capitalizing on a loose clearance from Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, Pedersen seized the ball at the top of the box and unleashed a drive that deflected past Édouard Mendy to open the scoring.

The Haaland Masterclass

If the first half belonged to the unexpected hero, the second half belonged strictly to the talisman. Just three minutes after the restart, Martin Ødegaard sliced open the Senegalese backline with a pin-point through-ball. Haaland gathered it in stride, calmly sliding a left-footed strike into the top corner.

Senegal quickly punched back in the 53rd minute. Ismaïla Sarr displayed phenomenal upper-body strength to shrug off his marker and tuck a clean finish past Ørjan Nyland to give the Lions hope.

Yet, Haaland simply refused to let Senegal dream. Five minutes later, the Manchester City forward met a dangerous cross from Patrick Berg, launching a first-time volley that rattled violently off the underside of the crossbar and into the net. The spectacular brace brought Haaland’s tournament tally to four goals in just two matches.

With goalkeeper Édouard Mendy leaving the pitch due to an injury, Senegal threw caution to the wind in the closing stages. Deep into the lengthy 11 minutes of added time, Nicolas Jackson picked out Ismaïla Sarr inside the penalty box. Sarr expertly controlled and fired home his second of the night to make it 3-2, setting up a frantic finale.

Norway’s defense rode their luck under heavy aerial pressure but held firm until the final whistle blew, prompting players to collapse onto the pitch in exhaustion and ecstasy.

The Road Ahead

With six points from two games, Norway sits side-by-side with tournament favorites France at the top of Group I. The two European powerhouses will clash on Friday, June 26, to determine who takes the top seed in the bracket. Senegal, meanwhile, sits on zero points and faces a must-win scenario against Iraq to keep any mathematical hopes of a best third-place advancement alive.
