The highly anticipated Round of 16 clash lived up to the drama early on. Brazil missed a golden opportunity to break the deadlock in the 13th minute when Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland made a spectacular diving save to deny Bruno Guimarães from the penalty spot. The teams went into halftime scoreless, locked in a tense tactical battle.
The breakthrough came in the 79th minute. Substitute Andreas Schjelderup delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, allowing Haaland to rise above the Brazilian defense and power a header past Alisson Becker.
As Brazil pushed numbers forward in desperation, Haaland struck again in the 90th minute. Collecting a pass outside the area, the Manchester City striker unleashed a fierce, low drive into the bottom corner to extend the lead to 2-0.
The brace brings Haaland’s tournament tally to seven goals, placing him in a dead heat with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé for the Golden Boot.
Neymar converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to pull one back for Brazil, but the final whistle blew moments later, sparking wild celebrations from the Norwegian contingent.
The result preserves one of football’s most unique statistics: Norway remains the only national team in the world to have played Brazil multiple times without ever losing, extending their unbeaten head-to-head record to three wins and two draws. For Brazil, the defeat marks their earliest World Cup exit since 1990.
Norway will travel to Miami for their historic quarterfinal match on Saturday, July 11, where they will face the winner of the upcoming Mexico vs. England fixture.
