Cape Town, SA (July 12, 2026) – The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) has confirmed the tragic and sudden passing of national team and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Jayden Adams at the age of 25.

Adams was discovered by local authorities on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at a property on Military Road in the Cape Town suburb of Schotschekloof. Western Cape police have registered an inquest to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. An official cause of death has not yet been established. Local officials and club representatives have requested privacy for the family and urged the public to refrain from speculation during this difficult time.

Adams leaves behind a profound legacy as one of the country’s brightest sporting talents. He recently returned from representing Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in all three Group A matches against Mexico, Czechia, and South Korea, helping South Africa secure a historic first-ever advancement to the tournament’s knockout stages. Demonstrating immense personal resilience, Adams famously took the field against Czechia on June 18 just hours after learning of the passing of his grandmother, Marianna Adams.

At the club level, Adams was a vital asset for Pretoria-based powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns, whom he joined in January 2025 after a celebrated tenure as an academy graduate at Stellenbosch FC. In the recent 2025–26 season, he helped guide the Sundowns to a historic double, capturing both the domestic Betway Premiership title and the prestigious CAF Champions League trophy.

Tributes have poured in from across the global football community. FIFA President Gianni Infantino issued a statement expressing deep sadness and extending his heartfelt condolences to Adams’ family, teammates, and fans. Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture Gayton McKenzie praised Adams’ dedication to his country, calling him a patriot who played through personal heartbreak to elevate South African football on the world stage.

Adams is survived by his longtime partner, Aqueelah Adendorf, and their five-year-old daughter. Funeral arrangements and memorial details will be announced by the family in due course.
