NYRB defeat Atlanta United
|Atlanta United made their first home debut in front of 55,000 at the impressively asymmetrical Bobby Dodd stadium for their MLS opener.
The brand-new team scored its first-ever goal in the 25th minute against the New York Red Bulls, daring the thousands in red or black or gold to believe all over again in an Atlanta team that wears red or black or gold.
Yamil Asad scored the club’s first goal in the 25th minute, tucking in Tyrone Mears’ cross at the back post and touching off a joyous celebration from the capacity crowd at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Atlanta still seemed poised to take all three until Daniel Royer equalized in the 76th, heading home a corner from Sacha Kljestan – and six minutes later, the ball deflected off Walkes and in.
The New York Red Bulls late picked up with two goals after the 75th minute – including an own goal charged to Anton Walkes in the 82nd minute gave the visitors a 2-1 victory.
