Cosmos sign winger Eugene Starikov
|The New York Cosmos announced today the signing of striker, Eugene Starikov, ahead of the 2017 NASL Season.
“Eugene is a great addition to the overall squad,” said Cosmos Head Coach and Sporting Director, Giovanni Savarese. “He is a young and talented player who can give the team a different look in attack.”
Starikov, 28, began playing in the USL Premier Development League in 2008 at IMG Academy Brandenton and scored five goals for the club before moving to Russia’s elite, Zenit Saint
Petersburg. Staying in the Russian Premier League, he then went on loan to Tom Tomsk and Rostov, where he scored four goals between the two clubs. Starikov joins the Cosmos after playing last season in the Ukrainian Premier League for Chornomorets Odesa, having 10 appearances and netting 2 goals for the club. The striker has already contributed to the New York Cosmos during preseason in their Dominican Republic tour, where he scored twice and added two assists in three matches.
“I have really enjoyed the preseason with the team and feel very comfortable with the group,”
said Starikov. “Signing for such an iconic club it’s an honor and I look forward to having a successful season and to helping the team in any way I can.” The Cosmos also announced the signing of Ghanaian midfielder, Kalif Alhassan. The 26-year-old spent the 2016 NASL season with Tampa Bay. Prior to joining the Rowdies, he played over 1800 minutes for Minnesota United, scored four goals and added six assists. Alhassan also played five seasons with the Portland Timbers. “Kalif is a dynamic player who will help us be more competitive,” said Giovanni Savarese. “He will add depth to our squad, as we look forward to preparing our 2017 season.”
The Cosmos will kick off the 2017 NASL Season March 25, when they travel to Juan Ramón Loubriel Stadium to take on Puerto Rico FC.
The Cosmos’ 2017 home opener will take place at MCU Park in Brooklyn on Saturday, April 1 at 7:00 pm against Miami FC.
