Red Bulls waived striker Fredrik Gulbrandsen

The Red Bulls put striker Fredrik Gulbrandsen on waivers, club has announced on Tuesday.

The striker had been on a season-long loan from Austrian sister club RB Salzburg. He had no goals and one assist in 364 minutes, spread over 12 appearances.

If the 24-year-old Norwegian clears waivers, as expected, he will return to Salzburg. His departure means two-striker formations are done for the foreseeable future, and the Red Bulls will stick with their traditional 4-2-3-1. It also would clear an international spot on the roster for the summer transfer window, which runs July 10-Aug. 9.

One viable candidate is French forward Alexy Bosetti, 24, who finished a week-long trial. He won the 2013 U-20 World Cup with France and had six-goal seasons in 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons for Lyon, but is looking to regain that form. The Red Bulls also were linked, on Colombian radio, with attacking midfielder Juan Quintero, 24, who is on loan from Porto to Independiente Medellin.
