A true NASA and American hero, Oscars

The 89th annual Oscars on Saturday night, take counterpart with the stars of “Hidden Figures.

Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monae welcomed NASA physicist Katherine Johnson onto the stage to thank her for her contribution to history as one of the first black women working on the space race in the 1960s.

“A true NASA and American hero,” Henson described the 98-year-old woman, who received a standing ovation from the crowd.

The Oscar-nominated film follows Johnson (Henson), Dorothy Vaughan (Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Monae) as they fight segregation at NASA.

Johnson was known best for her accuracy in celestial navigation, calculating trajectories, launch windows and emergency back-up plans for Project Mercury.

Katherine Coleman Goble Johnson is one of the top rate physicist and mathematician who made contributions to the United States’ aeronautics and space programs with the early application of digital electronic computers at NASA.
