Anti-Putin protesters gather in Times Square
|NEW YORK – Hundreds of people protesting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin once again filled Times Square Saturday afternoon, February 26, 2022.
Protesters unfurled a large Ukrainian flag and held placards demanding an end to the war.
There are 150,000 Ukrainians living in New York City, majority are in Sheepshead Bay, Manhattan Beach, and Brighton Beach in Brooklyn are known to many as Little Odessa due to the large, yet tight-knit Ukrainian population and in New Jersey, Clifton.
The U.S. is sending more than $350 million in military aid to Ukraine. Germany also announced it would be sending Ukraine additional anti-tank weapons and surface-to-air missiles.
More continues to ratchet up the invasion by sending in additional forces and weaponry in the wake of international sanction and condemnation.
Demonstrators marched from Times Square across Manhattan to the Upper East Side where they and others gathered at East 67t and Lexington Avenue near the permanent mission of the Russian Federation, the headquarters of Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations.
Since Thursday Feb. 25, the Empire State Building will shine its world-famous tower lights in the colors of the Ukrainian flag trough Sunday.
The Ukrainian government reported more than 3,500 dead or captured Russian soldiers.
