Bradley Wright-Phillips Fastest Player 100 Goals

Bradley Wright-Phillips Fastest Player to 100 MLS Regular Season Goals on Wednesday.

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 100th Major League Soccer regular season goal against D.C. United on July 25, 2018.

Wright-Phillips is the fastest to hit the mark, doing so in just 159 games. Taylor Twellman was the previous record holder, hitting the century mark in 174 games.

The Englishman has scored 118 total goals for the New York Red Bulls, across all competitions, including the MLS Cup Playoffs, U.S. Open Cup and Concacaf Champions League.

Wright-Phillips entered the MLS scene on August, 25, 2013 against Chivas USA. Five matches later, Wright-Phillips scored his first league goal at Houston on October 20.

The next season he went on to score 27 regular season goals, securing his first MLS Golden Boot.

BWP scored 24 goals in 2016 and a second MLS Golden Boot.  With 17 goals in 2017, Wright-Phillips was the second player in MLS history to record 15-plus goals in four consecutive seasons, joining Robbie Keane.

Only three other players in league history have scored 15+ goals in three or more consecutive seasons. Per Elias, 18 players have scored 20 or more goals in an MLS season, while BWP is one of only two players in league history to do so twice in their MLS career.

Across his career, BWP has notched 198 goals through the MLS, EFL League One, EFL Championship, MLS Cup Playoffs, U.S. Open Cup, Concacaf Champions League, EFL Cup and Premier League.

Wright-Phillips of is the eleventh player in MLS history to reach the century mark in goals, according to MLS Communications. He is currently tied for 10th all-time in league goals with 100 (with Edson Buddle); next on the list is Taylor Twellman, at 101

Wright-Phillips stands third among active MLS players, behind Chris Wondolowski (140) and Kei Kamara (106), who are second and seventh all-time, respectively.

Congratulations received from his family
“We are so proud of you. Congratulations, we love you.”

It was kind of lucky,” Wright-Phillips said following the game, as the record-breaking goal squirted through David Ousted’s hands on a wet night in Washington D.C.

Wright-Phillips scored his 100 regular season goals in just 159 games. Taylor Twellman was the previous record holder, hitting the century mark in 174 games.

“I’m obviously happy,” Wright-Phillips said, nearly five years to the day from signing with the organization. “Not just to score 100 goals, but to do it for this club, means a lot to me. They gave me a chance.”

To celebrate, Wright-Phillips peeled off his game-issued jersey to reveal a second jersey underneath. Instead of his traditional “99” on the back, it read “100.”

“It was an idea that was brought to me and I liked it,” he said. “I wanted to show the traveling fans the jersey underneath. It was kind of warm under there honestly. I got my chance and it was great. As soon as I got it I was relieved.”

BWP’s strike was not only a historic moment — it was also the difference in New York’s 1-0 victory over D.C. United.

Head Coach Chris Armas had nothing but praise for his striker.

“What a day to celebrate Bradley Wright-Phillips,” Armas said. “He’s obviously a club legend, but we’ve all been privileged, whoever’s spent some time around him — this is my fourth year with him — to just be part of his 100th goal, that it comes in a derby match and a meaningful one on the road. It’s a big win for him. I’m really happy for Brad.”

And his record is just the latest in a line of amazing moments for BWP in a Red Bulls kit, according to Aaron Long.

“Brad is the best we expect him to score goals like that,” Long said. “We know he’s going to score goals, he’s going to keep scoring goals. He is the fastest to 100 ever, that says something great about him.”
