Cosmos 1-1 draw vs Otawa Fury FC
|The New York Cosmos were held to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at TD Place, as the Cosmos and Ottawa Fury FC each scored in the second half. Venezuelan midfielder Juan Arango rescued a point for New York in the 79th minute, powering a header into the top corner of the net to equalize 25 minutes after Ottawa took the lead on Ryan Williams’ strike.
Cosmos goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer leaped into action in the 12th minute of the match, lunging to his left and denying Fury forward Thomas Stewart’s low attempt from the left corner of the 18-yard box.
Eleven minutes later, Yohandry Orozco found the first clear chance for the visitors, creating space at the top of the box and smacking a shot that skidded wide of the far post.
Ottawa forced a turnover in the Cosmos half to take the lead in the 54th minute. Williams charged into the left portion of the penalty area and fired under a sprawling Maurer.
But the Cosmos worked hard for the equalizer, and eventually found it after some heady play from their leading goal scorer. Substitute midfielder Andrés Flores’ service from the right wing into the box ended up at the foot of Adam Moffat. The Scottish midfielder mistimed his blast, but got under his shot’s rebound and picked out Arango with a headed pass. Arango’s thumping header whizzed past the outstretched glove of Ottawa goalkeeper Romuald Peiser, it was his 12th goal of the NASL Season. The Cosmos (11-5-3 Fall, 17-5-7 Combined) remain on top of the league’s Fall Season and Combined Season Standings with only three games remaining.
They are on a three-game unbeaten streak and have lost only once in their last 13 matches. Another road game is next on the schedule. New York travels to Jacksonville for a matchup with the Armada on Saturday, Oct. 15. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
