Israel to host FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in 2024
APRIL 29, 2023 MANILA (Philippines) – The first Universality FIBA 3×3 Olympic Qualifying Tournament (UOQT) will take place in Israel in 2024.
The decision was taken at the FIBA Central Board in Manila, Philippines.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis said: “We are delighted that the FIBA 3×3 Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament will be held in Israel next year and are confident that it will be a memorable event for our players and fans on the road to the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. To have a major 3×3 event in a traditional basketball country like Israel confirms the growth of our second discipline.”
Israeli Basketball Association President Amiram Halevy added: “It is a great honour and privilege for us as a federation and as the State of Israel to host such an important tournament. As we have done in the past, we will provide everyone who comes to play, referee or watch the games a great experience.”
The Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament will see 8 teams per gender compete over 2 days to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This UOQT will consist of Israel and the best 7 teams in the National Federation ranking (not yet qualified to Paris) after the cut-off date of 1 November 2023 which have not played in the Olympic Basketball tournaments in the last two Olympics (Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020). The winner in each category will go to Paris 2024.
