New York City FC documentary selected for 2016 Tribeca Film Festival

Tribeca Film Festival has announced that it will host the world premiere of “Win” an all-access documentary about the birth of New York City FC – Win!

It’s about story of the formation of the 20th Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise in the run-up to its inaugural season. When the English Premier League’s Manchester City teamed up with the New York Yankees to create New York City FC, the first MLS team in the five boroughs, the world was waiting to see the next chapter in New York City’s rich soccer history.

An independent film crew led by award-winning director, Justin Webster, was given unfettered access from the boardroom to the locker room, as they followed the ambitious project for two years, watching the creation of a sports club from scratch. Starting with no players, no club badge, no jersey, and no fan base, Win! tracks New York City FC from the day of its announcement through its inaugural season.

The film – executive produced by Richard Brown of Anonymous Content with ongoing support from special advisor Dylan Leiner of Sony Pictures Classics – is focused on the main characters at the center of creating this new Club. It follows the first ever employee of New York City FC, Sporting Director Claudio Reyna, a legend of American soccer and the former captain of the U.S. National Team. The film also features the first ever player to sign, Club Captain, David Villa, World Cup, European Cup and Champions League winner and the Spanish National Team’s all-time highest goal scorer as well as first ever coach, Jason Kreis, a young star of U.S. soccer coaches known for his passion and determination.

As the story unfolds, the roster grows, taking in global stars, MLS veterans and young talent, facing highs and lows, joys and sacrifices, disappointments and triumphs of the first season, all watched by a developing and passionate fan base. New York City FC fights to win the hearts of New Yorkers, as the Club prepares to play its home games at the world famous Yankee Stadium, a global icon of the City.

New York City FC Sporting Director, Claudio Reyna, said:

“We are honored to be part of the Tribeca Film Festival, and excited to share the story of New York City FC. I have been incredibly proud to be part of this Club and to have watched us grow and develop into what we have become, in our second season in Major League Soccer. We hope this will give our fans and anyone with an interest in our great game an insight into the unique challenges of building a Club.
