New York Cosmos beat NYCFC 1-0

Open Cup match Wednesday night at Fordham University’s Jack Coffey Field,  East River Derby has for secong year winner by NASL NY Cosmos defeating MLS New York City FC 1-0 in a fourth-round U.S.

During last year NY Cosmos beat NYCFC on penalty kicks, while this year midfielder Danny Szetela was able to head in the game-winning goal in the 88th minute off of a Yohandry Orozco cross, following a Cosmos’ counterattack.

“I think I looked at the scoreboard at the 85th minute,” Szetela said. “I’m like, in my head, ‘My legs are tired, I’m not going to overtime. The next time the ball gets out wide I’m just going to make that run that I always make down the middle.”

And Cosmos essentially started their regular lineup, NYCFC coach Patrick Vieira was forced to play without some starters due to international play restrictions, and elected to rest others in anticipation of the team’s Saturday match against the Philadelphia Union.

However, NYCFC missing regulars David Villa leading scorer, midfielder Andrea Pirlo, goalkeeper Josh Saunders such as defenders R.J. Allen and Frederic Brilliant.

Vieira during press conference admitted he “made a mistake” in resting so many players, he also said his decision to do so did not mean the team didn’t take the game seriously, emphasizing he viewed it as very important.

“It was really important to win!,” Vieria said. “It was important for myself. It was important for the team. It was important for the club. It was important for the fans.”

NYCFC midfielder Mikey Lopez also thought that the team didn’t take Cosmos lightly, and apologized to the fans for the club’s recent showing, including a record 7-0 blowout loss at the hands of the team’s division rival Red Bulls in May.

Heartbroken message was release “I want to say (to the fans) that we’re sorry. I’m sorry,” Lopez said. “But as much as they hurt, we’re hurt—we’re hurting as well. Because we wanted to win this game, we wanted to try to win this tournament.”

While NYCFC continues to struggle, opposite happiness flow by Szetela doesn’t have any worries only big hopes that Cosmos can continue their U.S. Open Cup run. The midfielder said he even has a specific round five opponent in mind too, the Red Bulls.

“We want to be the kings of New York,” Szetela said.!!! So far NASL they continue to owe that title.
