NY Cosmos home opener with winning over Furry 3-0
|The New York Cosmos home opener at the Hofstra’s Shuart Stadium Sunday night, the North American Soccer League championship started without Spanish legends Raul and Marcos Senna, retirements.
The new season Cosmos home opener started the title defense with a 3-0 win over Ottawa Fury FC on Sunday night.
“We knew we were going to be different without them,” Cosmos coach Giovanni Savarese said of Raul and Senna. “We have different players, but I feel we have more depth this year. You saw when we made substitutions, everyone who came in is a player who could change the game.”
Venezuelab Juan Arango lead the charge of 2-0 who struck for a first-half brace on his debut.
“Any player dreams of having a great debut,” Arango said through a translator. “Even better when you can score two goals. It’s a dream.”
Arrieta beat Ottawa goalkeeper Romuald Peiser in a race for a loose ball and crossed in front to Arango, who easily buried the ball into the open net to put the Cosmos in front 1-0 in the 36th minute.
Two minutes later, Arango had his second, tapping into the empty net after Peiser spilled a low Sebastian Guenzatti cross.
There were additional chances as well, with Arango, who most recently played for Tijuana in Liga MX, playing for serving as a constant threat in the Ottawa defensive third throughout.
“Arango had a very good game in being smart, in finding spaces, in being able to get those balls in the right area to be able to score,” Savarese said.
“I thought Arrieta was fantastic today,” Savarese said. “His movements, his connections, he’s another smart player. You could see how he was holding the ball with big guys and being able to find space.”

“It’s been long, finishing last season injured and then on the second day of preseason I was hurt and was out for two months,” Moffat said. “I missed every single preseason game, but the doctors were helpful, and I started practice a few weeks ago.
Less than 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute for Ruben Bover, the midfielder put the game away, chipping Peiser from 45 yards after the goalkeeper came well off his line to slide and kick away a Flores cross from midfield.
Even goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer an excellent goalkeeper make four saves, including a kick save in the second half, to preserve the clean sheet.
“It was a good result, but we have a lot to work on moving forward,” Maurer said. “First game so early to celebrate, but we are happy to get out win with of 3-0.
