NYC Mayor Eric Adams removes brother from NYPD

NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Eric Adams is switching up his top staff less than a week after he appointed his brother as an NYPD deputy commissioner. Bernard Adams will instead serve as the executive director of mayoral security, the New York Times reported on Wednesday.

The Times reports that concerns of nepotism may have fueled the switch. According to the report, it is unlawful in New York City for public servants to use their position “to obtain any financial gain” for themselves or close associates. However, the law does allow hiring family if the Conflicts of Interest Board determines that there would be no conflict, according to the Times.

Bernard Adams, 56, is a former NYPD sergeant who served 20 years before retiring from the force in 2006. In his amended position, the younger Adams will only oversee his brother’s security, officials said.

“Personal security — my life, my life  I want in the hands of my brother with his 20-year law enforcement experience,” said Adams, himself a former NYPD captain, in an interview with The Times. “He has the police experience, but he also has the personal experience. He knows his brother, and he’s going to keep his brother safe.”
