|On this Day! Vujadin Boškov has died at age 82.
Boškov a footballer and coach, known from Real Madrid, Roma, Sampdoria and many other top European clubs coached as well as the Yugoslavia national team.
Boškov was born in the village of Begečnear Novi Sad, Serbia. His career started as a player with FK Vojvodina, and most of his career build up in professional player 1946–1960.
In 1961 he moved to Italy to play for Serie A club Sampdoria for one season 1961- 62, before accepting a stint as a player – coach at Swiss side Young Boys 1962–1964.
Boškov then returned to the club that made him as a player – FK Vojvodina – and spent 7 seasons 1964–71 as a technical director, leading the club to winning one Yugoslav league championship in 1965–66.
He also became a playing member of the Yugoslavia national team, and was part of the team that won the silver medal at the 1952 Olympic football tournament. Also he played at the 1954 and 1958 FIFA World Cups.
A former Yugoslavia international as a player Boskov, captured the Spanish title with Real Madrid in the 1979-1980 season, having previously managed Feyenoord and Den Haag in the Dutch league.
He led Sampdoria to the club’s first Serie A title in 1991 and reached the European Cup final with the Italian team in 1992, losing 1-0 to Barcelona at Wembley.
