President Joe Biden Approves South Carolina Emergency Declaration
|New York — Tropical Storm Idalia moved into South Carolina on Wednesday night after making landfall along Florida’s Gulf Coast as a powerful Category 3 hurricane earlier in the day. While the storm had weakened as it moved across Florida and through Georgia, entering South Carolina with maximum sustained wind speeds of around 60 mph, it was still bringing heavy flooding to the coast of the Palmetto State. It later moved on to North Carolina.
President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared that an emergency exists in the State of South Carolina and ordered Federal assistance to supplement State, tribal, and local response efforts due to the emergency conditions resulting from Hurricane Idalia beginning on August 29, 2023, and continuing.
At @POTUS' direction, the federal government pre-positioned personnel and resources to immediately support response and recovery efforts for Hurricane Idalia.
