Red Bulls 2-0 win 2018 Scotiabank CONCACAF
|The New York Red Bulls take big step at home, topping Honduran side Club Deportivo Olimpia 2-0 to win their round of 16 series 3-1 on aggregate.
The victory puts the Red Bulls into the quarterfinals of the Scotiabank CONCACAF Champions League, where they’ll face Mexican side Club Tijuana.
After a scoreless first half, the Red Bulls’ Bradley Wright-Phillips decided to go it alone to give his club an advantage. The forward tracked back and won the ball back around 35 yards from goal. He then moved toward goal and used his right foot to tuck a low, driven shot into the near post to put the Red Bulls on top.
Olimpia looked for a quick equalizer, with Red Bulls goalkeeper Luis Robles only able to deflect a shot from Michaell Chirinos in the 57th minute directly front of him, but Diego Reyes was unable to put the rebound in to draw things level.
Instead, the Red Bulls capped off the victory with an insurance goal. Sean Davis shifted his shoulders to lose his defender and wrong-footed goalkeeper Donis Escober with a shot from outside the box. That ended the current Scotiabank CONCACAF League champion’s run in the SCCL.
As of the Red Bulls midfielder Felipe is halfway out the door. Head coach Jesse Marsch told to sources, all but confirmed the midfielder’s exit after Martins didn’t make the Red Bulls’ 18-man roster for their 2-0 win against Olimpia in the Round of 16 in the CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday night at Red Bull Arena.
“I think there will be clarity in the next few days,” Marsch said.
The trade, which was first reported by Metro, would send Felipe along with allocation money to the Vancouver Whitecaps for defender Tim Parker. The Post confirmed a trade is expected to be completed in the coming days and Parker could be ready for the Red Bulls’ MLS home opener against the Portland Timbers on March 10.
Parker, who grew up on Long Island and played at St. Johns University, reportedly requested a trade earlier this offseason after he and the Whitecaps couldn’t agree on a salary demands.
Whitecaps President Bob Lenarduzzi confirmed Parker turned down their offer.
Felipe’s replacement centrally in the midfield will be Tyler Adams, Marsch said. Adams had been used as a right wingback last season but played in Felipe’s midfield slot Thursday. Adams’ move back to the central part of the field will quiet criticisms about Marsch playing him out of position.
The Red Bulls have signed former academy defender Kyle Duncan to a contract.
Duncan, who joined Red Bulls as a trialist this offseason, tried his luck abroad with French side Valenciennes. The 20-year-old right-back’s signing is expected to be announced in the coming days.
Duncan was part of the Red Bulls’ academy before leaving for France. He also was a member of the U.S. Under-20 cycle.
In another way the Red Bulls will waive another homecoming signing, Armando Moreno, who rejoined the Red Bulls earlier this offseason.
Moreno will sign with Red Bulls II, the team’s USL affiliate, according to a source.
