Saint Phanourios Orthodox Holiday

Saint Phanourios (Greek: Άγιος Φανούριος), also known as St. Phanourios the Newly-Manifest is recognized as a saint by the Greek Orthodox Church and Orthodox believers around the Balkans. Greeks commemorates this day on August 27th, and Slavics September 09th annually.

The famous Fanuria (Phanourios-pita) is a sweet bread / cake made in honor of Saint Martyr Phanourios (Fanurij), these feast is celebrated on September 9th for Slavic Orthodox believers and it’s believed to help to fulfilling people’s wishes to become true.

The rule for preparing this cake is to be contain 9 ingredients. But most important of all is the one whose makes the bread to pray before beginning of preparation, to make a wish for themselves and to wish health, peace and happiness for the family. In this bread you can include marmalade, cinnamon, fruits, nuts, cocoa, etc.

Although there are many recipes on how to make Fanuria-pita there is no strict rule regarding the ingredients except that it should be 9 lean ingredients.
