The Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2017 show
“American Eccentricity,” featured an alternative view of patriotism in 2016, starting with the scenery set designer Stefan Beckman built a stage elevated above the audience that was strung with drop lights at the Hammerstein Ballroom, calling to mind a basement carnival rave.
Edwardian brocade and pointed shoulders were coupled with grunge glamour, all in pastel tones, while illustrations by artist Julie Verhoeven, with whom Jacobs collaborated on his Louis Vuitton Spring 2002 show, were embroidered on bags, shoes, and sweatshirts. As for the shoes, models wore platform heels even higher than the ones shown at the designer’s Fall 2016 show last February.
As was to be expected, the show featured an all-star cast, including Adriana Lima, Karlie Kloss, Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Jourdan Dunn, Stella Maxwell, Irina Shayk, Taylor Hill, and more. Each of the girls sported pastel-hued dreadlocks that sparked an uproar about cultural appropriation. The locks were purchased from an Etsy seller named Jen, who worked with legendary hair stylist Guido Palau to create the ideal shade for each look.
Jacobs responded to the controversy on social media: “And all who cry ‘cultural appropriation’ or whatever nonsense about any race of skin color wearing their hair in a particular style or manner funny how you don’t criticize women of color for straightening their hair. However, this was a copycat from a seller of Etsy, and Marc adopted her inspiration, most of designers do that, to enhance more publicity.
I respect and am inspired by people and how they look. I don’t see color or race I see people. I’m sorry to read that so many people are so narrow minded, Love is the answer. Appreciation of all and inspiration from anywhere is a beautiful thing. Think about it, Marc said on the press.
The New York Fashion Week is event relevant in a cause that Jacobs seems to have single-handedly taken up as his own. Love it or hate it, Jacobs’ most recent collection made a very clear statement that the fire of NYFW is far from lost. Check the social media post of his show.
