TORONTO FC CLINCH 2017 MLS SUPPORTERS’ SHIELD

With tonight’s 4-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls, Toronto FC has officially clinched the 2017 MLS Supporters’ Shield for the first time in club history. The shield is awarded to the team that earns the most points over the course of the 34-match regular season. Winning the Shield guarantees Toronto FC home-field advantage throughout the playoffs and a bye straight to the MLS Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Toronto FC became the first team to clinch a spot in the 2017 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs earlier this month. It is the third consecutive season the Reds have qualified for the playoffs.

With a record of 19-5-8 with 65 points TFC has set new club records for wins in a season (19), total points (65), goals scored (71), home wins (12), home points (39) and became the first club in league history to have two six-match winning streaks in a single season.

The 2017 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs will begin with the knockout round, which is a single-elimination match scheduled for Wednesday, October 25 and Thursday, October 26. Winners will advance to the Conference Semi-Finals, a two-leg series to be held on Monday, October 30/Tuesday, October 31 and Sunday, November 5. The Conference Finals, also a two-leg series, are a scheduled for Tuesday, November 21 and Tuesday, November 28 or Wednesday, November 29. The 2017 MLS Cup is scheduled for Saturday, December 9 at 4:00 p.m. ET.
