Toronto FC win over New York City FC with 5-0

The Toronto FC made huge win over New York City FC with 5-0, and Sebastian Giovinco had three goals and an assist to lead of the Eastern Conference semifinals in front of 28,355 at Yankee Stadium Sunday night.

Toronto FC wins the two-legged aggregate series 7-0 and advances to face the Montreal Impact in the

Jozy Altidore made it 3-0 in the 30th minute when he latched onto a ball over the top by Eriq Zavaleta and
fired in a blast off the bounce from the edge of the six-yard box. NYCFC’s best scoring chance of the first half came in the 38th minute when Frank Lampard put a shot from distance on frame, but TFC goalkeeper Clint Irwin dived to parry it away for a corner kick. Jonathan Osorio gave TFC a 4-0 lead when he tapped in a square pass from Will Johnson five minutes into the second half. Giovinco had his hat trick in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.

New York City FC Head Coach Patrick Vieira On the fans…
“This is why it’s really hard today the way we lost, because the fans responded to what I wanted
from them. They were fantastic. When we arrived to the Stadium there was around 100 people outside welcoming the players, really loud, making noise. The message from David and myself in the dressing room was that we don’t know what is going to happen at the end of the game, but we wanted to give something back to the fans. That’s why we are disappointed. We didn’t fulfill the expectations from the fans. They were there, they were present, and they were behind our back.

Today, yes, we let them down, but the message for them is to think about the first game that we played, to look at how the team improved, and this team will be better next season. I want to thank them all for their support, I think they have been fantastic, they’ve been behind the team, they traveled to Toronto, and today they were fantastic. So the only thing I can promise to them is that we will come back next season with more determination, more anger, and do better than we did this year.” On his takeaway from this seaon …

“I’m actually really proud of the players because I strongly believe all this season they’ve been working really hard, they’ve been giving me everything and the game tonight doesn’t really reflect the way the players conduct themselves all season. But on the other side, as a football club, we want to improve, we want to be better and it will be important for us to make some strong decisions because we want to challenge teams like Toronto next season.”

“To be honest, my first year has been really good. To analyze the year, for me it was really important to try and get the best out of the players. And I think the staff and myself, we managed to do it. Our objective was to qualify for the playoff, we wanted to be a good team, a strong team who had a clear identity of how we want to play the game. If you look at our philosophy this season, it’s been very positive. Of course it’s not perfect and there’s a lot of parts of the game that we need to improve. But overall I strongly believe that the team built a really strong philosophy of playing the game. We created a lot of chances, we’re scoring goals.

That’s the identity that I want to give to this football club. Next year it’s how can we be a little more consistent in our performance and improve some aspects of the game, but I think we’re in the right way.”

New York City FC M Andoni Iraola
On the impact of TFC scoring first…
“We thought it’d be much bigger if we scored first and put some pressure on them. Once they scored their first and second goal, it’s obviously very difficult to turn around the game. We still at the half wanted to try to play a good 45 minutes but we were unable.” On Altidore and Giovinco being difference makers…

“They pressed high the same way they did the first leg. We took risk, but they had two very good forwards. We were defending, especially at the beginning, two v. two versus them, and they made the difference.” New York City FC M Tommy McNamara On the feeling now that the season is over…

“It was a difficult game, Toronto is a very talented team and they made it very tough on us. The early goal digs an even deeper hole and they’re a good team, like I said. We’re really disappointed right now, but I think when it passes over the next week and reflect on the entire season, we improved a lot upon last year and expect the same for next year.

If there was any difficulty of giving up an early goal: I felt as though we never gave up, we were still fighting for balls. We were still trying to get a goal, get ourselves in the game, you never know. But credit to Toronto, they did a very good job.”

New York City D R.J. Allen
On the team’s improvement over its first as a franchise… “It’s something that we’ll take into the offseason. But looking back on the season, we learned a lot and we learned a lot about our group. From year one to year two, we definitely improved but at the end of the day we still didn’t win the silverware and at the end of the day that’s what it’s all about.”

On his message to the fans…
“My message to the fans, on behalf of this season and going into next, we’re sorry what happened today. We look forward to your continued support coming into next season and you guys are a major part of this football club.”
