United States president Jimmy Carter has died age 100
|The longest-living United States president, Jimmy Carter served in the White House from 1977-1982, and passed at 100.
Carter’s organization, the Carter Center, announced his death on X Sunday. The cause of his death has not yet been published, though Carter spent the better half of the past two years in hospice after several brief hospital stays prior to Feb. 2023.
Multiple U.S. officials expressed loving sentiments for Carter the day of his death, President Joe Biden ordered an official state funeral for Carter in Washington D.C. scheduled for Jan. 9.
Alaska representatives joined in memorializing the humanitarian Nobel Peace Prize winner. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R – Ak.) posted to Facebook to give her condolences, saying in part:
“President Jimmy Carter will be remembered for his service to our nation and his post-presidency dedication to humanitarian efforts across the globe. He led a remarkable life and left a legacy of peace…”
Sen. Dan Sullivan remarked on Carter’s death on X, his post noting his difference of opinion when it came to Carter’s politics.
“Regardless of our significant political differences about Alaska and the critical importance of a strong U.S. military, I appreciated President Carter’s devotion to faith, family, service to others and Middle East peace. I also have deep respect for his service to our country in the U.S. Navy where he was involved in the development of our country’s first nuclear submarine…”
Biden has ordered the recognition of Carter’s death be a National Day of Mourning in the U.S., and for all flags to fly at half-mast for the 30 days following his funeral.
