RBNY vs Whitecaps draw
|The New York Red Bulls went into BC Place on Saturday night and stole a point from the Whitecaps, after a late goal by Daniel Royer in the 90th minute, his second of the match, to level the score at two.
It’s the second brace in his last three matches for Royer, and sixth goal in his last six games.
After the match, Royer spoke to reporters about the teams’ resolve and finding a way to bounce back after being down a score.
“I think it was really important to bounce back and at least get a point out of this game,” Royer said. “I think we’ve been the better team today, I think we controlled most parts of the game. I think more was possible but it was still great to bounce back late in the game.”
Even though the Red Bulls came away with a point on the road, Head Coach Chris Armas believes the result was a bit disappointing for the club.
“It’s a strange one because we thought in many ways we controlled the game in the first half, especially coming right before halftime giving up the set piece goal,” Armas said. “It’s disappointing for sure. But we’re still OK.”
Defender Tim Parker, who made his return to Vancouver after spending three seasons with the club, felt battling back and finding a way to steal a point on the road, rather than leaving without any, was the silver lining of tonight’s match.
“To get a point in the last few minutes like we did is very important for how our season is going to play out,” Parker said. “We’re in the Supporters’ Shield race, and getting a point here instead of walking out without anything is big.”
The Red Bulls will now have to turn the page quickly, as they prepare for rivalry week and face off against NYCFC at Yankee Stadium, on August 22, for the fourth installment of the New York Derby. The game will be broadcasted on FS1 at 7 pm/et.
