Wessam Abou Ali hit a hat-trick for Al Ahly FC against FC Porto in a breath-taking eight-goal thriller at MetLife Stadium, but it was not enough to extend either team’s FIFA Club World Cup 2025™ adventure.

With Palmeiras hitting back for a dramatic 2-2 draw with Inter Miami CF in Group A’s other fixture, it was the sides in action at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium who progressed, leaving both Al Ahly and Porto to take an early flight home before the Round of 16.

Al Ahly grabbed the lead on 15 minutes as Porto gave the ball away cheaply, allowing Hamdy Fathy to advance towards the box then play in Abou Ali on the left who rolled the ball across goalkeeper Claudio Ramos and into the far corner via the post.

But the lead was short-lived as precocious teenage talent Rodrigo Mora danced his way through the heart of the Al Ahly defence before rounding Mohamed Elshenawy and rifling home.

Wessam Abou Ali, Al Ahly striker:

I’m very very sad. I feel like we should have scored six or seven goals. There were a lot of chances to score more and win the game, but we weren’t focused enough to score, and we didn’t defend well. But I’m happy to have scored the goals and the performance we put in.”
