MEXICO 2–0 TRIUMPH OVER SOUTH AFRICA IN WORLD CUP OPENER

MEXICO SECURES HISTORIC 2–0 TRIUMPH OVER SOUTH AFRICA IN WORLD CUP OPENER

MEXICO CITY – The Mexican Football Federation (FMF) celebrates a momentous beginning to the FIFA World Cup 2026 following the Men’s National Team’s 2–0 victory over South Africa yesterday evening at a sold-out Mexico City Stadium. The win earns Mexico its first three crucial points, placing the nation in a commanding position at the top of Group A.

The match commenced with an explosive breakthrough in the 8th minute, when forward Julián Quiñones capitalized on a clinical cross from Roberto Alvarado to net the opening goal of the tournament. Fueled by the energy of over 80,000 passionate home fans, Mexico dictated the tempo and maintained a 61% possession advantage throughout the fixture.

The competitive dynamic shifted heavily in the second half. Following a straight red card issued to South Africa’s Yaya Sithole in the 49th minute, El Tri pressed forward to solidify their lead. In the 66th minute, veteran striker Raúl Jiménez combined expertly with midfielder Érik Lira to fire home a low drive, doubling the lead and securing the win.

While the federation commends the squad’s technical dominance and high passing accuracy (91%), the closing minutes highlighted areas for internal review. Following a second-half VAR intervention that reduced South Africa to nine men, Mexico’s center-back César Montes was shown a direct red card during stoppage time. Montes will serve an automatic suspension for the upcoming match.

Post-Match Statement from Head Coach Javier Aguirre:
“To open a home World Cup with three points is exactly what this country deserved. The early execution from Quiñones gave us the foundation we needed, and Jiménez showed true veteran leadership when we needed to seal the game. However, playing on the world stage demands absolute emotional discipline. The late expulsion of César Montes was completely avoidable and an internal review will be conducted. We cannot afford lapse penalties as the tournament progresses.”

The Mexican Football Federation extends its deepest gratitude to the millions of fans supporting the team both in the stadium and across the world. The Men’s National Team will immediately begin preparations at their training base for the next Group A fixture, where they look to secure early qualification for the knockout rounds.
