NY Cosmos another lead!
The New York Cosmos added to their lead in standings Saturday night, collecting three more points with a 1-0 win over Minnesota United FC. David Diosa netted what would end up as the match-winning goal in the 32nd minute.
The Cosmos winger’s volleyed strike whizzed past United goalkeeper Sammy Ndjock to give the home side a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Rubén Bover provided the assist.
Minnesota nearly equalized four minutes later. Lance Laing’s free kick from 32 yards clanged off the crossbar, over the outstretched hand of Cosmos goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer.
Back from international duty, Salvadorian midfielder Andrés Flores made an impact for the Cosmos as a second-half sub. Flores replaced Diosa in the 63rd minute and spearheaded a promising counter attack shortly thereafter, running a give-and-go with fellow midfielder Sebastián Guenzatti. The final ball for an onrushing Lucky Mkosana was narrowly cleared off the line. Maurer registered an Emirates Cosmos Man of the Match performance, making six saves against a potent Loons attack that included league-leading goal scorer Christian
Ramirez. In the 81st minute, Maurer denied a golden chance for Ramirez deep in the penalty area after a deflected cross reached the striker unmarked. Maurer reacted quickly to the shot, lunging to his left to help to Cosmos hold their lead. With the win, the Cosmos (9-3-2 Fall, 15-3-6 Combined) are now six points clear at the top of the NASL Fall Season Standings and seven up in the Combined Season Standings.
