SOFIA, BULGARIA (November 2, 2026) — In a historic shift for Eastern European politics, acting president Iliana Yotova has officially won the 2026 Bulgarian presidential runoff election. The landmark victory officially makes Yotova the first elected female head of state in Bulgaria’s history.

Yotova, 62, who originally stepped in as acting president in January 2026, defeated her reformist, pro-Western opponent Andrey Gyurov. Gyurov, a banker and former caretaker prime minister, secured 39.48% of the vote before formally conceding defeat as the final counts were finalized.

Running on a prominent campaign platform focused on bridging domestic political rifts and advocating for regional stability, Yotova addressed the nation from Sofia shortly after the projections were confirmed.

“I voted for national consensus through dialogue, for institutions that work for citizens, for a strong state with its own foreign policy in a strong Europe,” Yotova stated.

The election serves as a massive validation for Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s ruling Progressive Bulgaria party, which strongly endorsed Yotova’s independent ticket. Observers note that by keeping the presidency aligned with the governing parliamentary majority, the administration consolidates its political position heading into 2027, promising smoother institutional coordination on domestic reforms and defense.

International leaders have already begun offering their congratulations. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen posted her support on social media, writing: “From security and defence to our competitiveness and energy independence, I look forward to continuing our joint work. For a strong Bulgaria in a strong Europe.”

Yotova’s official five-year term as elected president is scheduled to begin on January 22, 2027.
