New York City FC qualified for MLS Playoffs second year
|Two years straight that New York City FC have qualified for the MLS Playoffs for the second year in a row.
Atlanta United’s 2-0 victory over Montreal Impact confirmed that NYCFC will go into the postseason for the second time in three years of play.
That result tonight at the Mercedes Benz Arena means that seventh-placed Montreal now mathematically cannot catch NYCFC.
Currently two points shy of last year’s tally of 54 points, Patrick Vieira’s men will now battle to secure the bye to the Eastern Conference semifinals in the final four games of the campaign.
NYC drew 1-1 with Houston Dynamo in East Hartford on Saturday in the 30th game of their campaign to close the gap on leaders Toronto FC to ten points, although the Boys in Blue have a game in hand.
Atlanta moved up to third place ahead of Chicago with the win, three points behind NYCFC with a game in hand of their own.
Following the Houston draw, Head Coach Vieira said: “Getting results is really important, but we understand that to get the result that we want, we need to play well.
“We need to play at a certain level. It will be important to have all the players coming back from injuries. Alex Ring didn’t play for a while, he trained twice with the team but he managed to go through the 90 minutes.
“We had players who came back from injuries, it was good to see Matarrita on the bench. Ethanand Mikey are getting better, and that’s good.”
Vieira’s men face Montreal, Chicago, New England and Columbus to complete their Regular Season schedule before going into their second postseason in the club’s third year of play.
