Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel emerged as the defining figure of the match. Kobel anchor-manned a flawless defensive performance with three crucial saves during active play, later delivering the decisive stops under the intense pressure of the shootout.

The match itself was characterized by elite defensive organization and immense physical friction. Switzerland controlled the tempo through sustained possession, holding 53% of the ball and completing 504 passes at an 88% accuracy rate. Colombia relied on rapid transition play to breach the Swiss structure, generating 15 total shots, but the South American side was limited to just three shots on target by a disciplined Swiss backline.

As the match progressed into extra time, the physical toll became evident. The sides combined for 44 fouls and five yellow cards, with neither tactical block willing to concede space.

With regular and extra time exhausted at 0–0, the knockout tie was settled at the penalty spot. After initial conversions from Juan Fernando Quintero and Granit Xhaka, Kobel denied Davinson Sánchez to give Switzerland an early advantage. Following misses from Manuel Akanji and Cucho Hernández, Colombia’s Luis Díaz converted under pressure to keep his side alive. However, Swiss midfielder Rubén Vargas confidently converted the final penalty to secure Switzerland’s place in the tournament’s final eight.
