Isaiah Hicks of the New York Knicks delivered some contributions in Team USA Basketball’s domination of Uruguay in a qualifying game.
When Team USA Basketball entered preparation for World Cup qualifiers,Isaiah Hicks on the New York Knicks was among the 14 players set to compete for 12 spots. He made the team, along with other familiar faces to Knick fans and current NBA players.
On Friday, Team USA faced Uruguay in a qualifying matchup, with a convincing 114-57 win. It took place at the Cox Pavilion in Las Vegas, NV, as part of the Americas Qualifiers.
Hicks played a team-low 12 minutes, but still made his presence felt in this short time, with seven points and five rebounds on 3-for-3 shooting from the field. He also picked up four personal fouls.
Aside from Hicks, former Knick Chasson Randle stood out for his play. His 15 points were second highest on the team and the three hits from behind the arc led the way.
Frank Mason of the Sacramento Kings and Derrick White of the San Antonio Spurs were the other main performers. Mason’s 16 points and eight assists were at the forefront, while White added 14 points and six assists of his own in just 19 minutes.
Led by former Knicks head coach Jeff Van Gundy, Team USA combined for 10-for-19 from three-point range and shot 60.8 percent from the field. They also had just eight turnovers in four quarters of action.
Team USA’s next qualifier takes place on the road against Panama on Monday, Sept. 17. Afterward, Preliminary Round games against Senegal, China and Latvia will follow from Saturday, Sept. 22 to Tuesday, Sept. 25, with the group that played in the Uruguay win.
The Knicks re-signed Hicks to a second two-way contract in the 2018 offseason. On this deal, in 2017-18, he averaged 4.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 13.3 minutes per game in 18 appearances.
In the G League, Hicks averaged 15.6 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists on 57.7 percent shooting in 29.5 minutes per game. With a 45-day cap on his time in the NBA, look for another full season’s worth of statistics for the Westchester Knicks in the 2018-19 campaign.
