Pride Month 2019 is particularly special in New York this year. The city will host WorldPride 2019, which promotes LGBTQ issues on an international level, as well as Stonewall50, marking the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Events like CosPlay & Pride, Savor Pride (a culinary experience) and the NYC Pride’s Human Rights Conference take place throughout the month, and several notable events will wrap up the celebration.
New York’s Pride march kicked off at noon Sunday with 677 contingents including community groups, major corporations and cast members from FX’s “Pose.” Organizers expected 150,000 people to march as hundreds of thousands more line the streets.
Opening Ceremony: WorldPride 2019 will kick off June 26 at Barclays Center. Celebrity Whoopi Goldberg will host the opening ceremony, which includes performances by Cyndi Lauper, Chaka Khan, Ciara, Todrick Hall and DJ Lina.
PrideFest: Set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 30, PrideFest is a street fair featuring exhibits, live entertainment, Pride merch booths and plenty of food. The event takes place on 4th Avenue, between Union Square and Astor Place Theatre.
Matinee NYC Pride: This WorldPride closing party happens in Hell’s Kitchen at Terminal 5 music venue near Pride Island (Pier 97 at Hudson River Park) and features a “raucous night of dancing and debauchery!”
NYC Pride March: Step off at noon at 26th Street and 5th Avenue (near Times Square) for the annual March through Greenwich Village. Join thousands who gather to recognize the fight against AIDS and LGBTQ discrimination and to remember those who have died from illness and violence. The event ends at Times Square, where a closing party will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. The party features live performances and a headline show from Grammy-winning artist Melissa Etheridge.
