81ST ANNUAL NYC COLUMBUS DAY PARADE
New York, NY (October 13, 2025) — In a historic and rare decision, organizers officially canceled the 81st Annual New York City Columbus Day Parade just hours before its scheduled start due to a destructive regional nor’easter.
The Columbus Citizens Foundation, which produces the massive celebration of Italian-American heritage, called off the demonstration following a state of emergency declaration by Governor Kathy Hochul. The severe autumn storm brought torrential rainfall, local flooding, and hazardous wind gusts exceeding 45 miles per hour to the tri-state area.
The physical march—which historically attracts over one million spectators and 35,000 marchers—was set to travel up Fifth Avenue from 44th Street to 72nd Street. Organizers confirmed that due to the complex logistics of the massive city operation, the parade will not be rescheduled.
Despite the street cancellation, Italian-American community leaders still gathered for the traditional pre-parade solemn Mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral to honor the contributions of the diaspora.
Prominent business executive and former head football coach Joe Moglia, who was selected as the 2025 Grand Marshal, expressed his disappointment but emphasized that public safety remains the absolute priority.
Broadcast partner WABC-TV adjusted its programming to air a live inside-the-studio celebration special, highlighting the achievements of this year’s Italian-American honorees and community nonprofits.
Foundation officials state that all organizational efforts will now shift entirely toward planning a triumphant return for the 82nd annual parade, which is scheduled to march on Monday, October 12, 2026.
