SIERRA LEONE OUTLINES STRATEGIC PRIORITIES FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL
United Nations, New York (November 3, 2025) — Ambassador Dr. Michael Imran Kanu, Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations, has officially unveiled the Council’s comprehensive program of work for November. Speaking from the United Nations Headquarters podium, Ambassador Kanu detailed a forward-looking peace and security agenda driven by consensus, transparency, and targeted thematic priorities.

Building on the foundation of Sierra Leone’s preceding leadership terms, the November presidency focuses on addressing interlocking global issues that reshape the modern security landscape. Ambassador Kanu announced that the agenda will highlight four core pillars: mitigating conflict-related food insecurity, addressing climate-related security risks, stemming the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, and actively mobilizing the Youth, Peace, and Security framework endorsed in the global Pact for the Future.
“Our presidency is anchored on driving clear institutional progress and upholding the highest standards of international diplomacy,” stated Ambassador Kanu. “We are dedicated to advancing a balanced program that elevates key African peacebuilding initiatives while comprehensively examining emerging environmental and humanitarian threats.”
The month’s program is highlighted by signature events designed to foster open, high-level international debate. Key events include a dedicated thematic briefing on the environmental impacts of armed conflicts and climate security risks, alongside an essential high-level open debate on conflict-linked food insecurity.

The Council will additionally prioritize mandated reviews on working methods, working in absolute alignment with the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda to ensure diverse civil society inclusion and gender-transformative perspectives across all formal sessions.
